JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine)
JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine) is a next-generation protocol specification that generalizes and refines the Polkadot architecture. It reimagines the relay chain as a flexible execution environment where services can be deployed directly, reducing the distinction between the relay chain and parachains. JAM introduces a service-oriented model where computation and state management are handled through a unified framework.
The JAM specification builds on the core innovations of Polkadot — shared security, asynchronous composability, and efficient validation — while enabling greater modularity. It represents a long-term evolution of the protocol rather than an immediate replacement of the existing runtime.
Where it fits: JAM is the future direction of Polkadot’s protocol design. It is currently in specification and development phases, with research and implementations underway.
